A monument to the Legion Action

The monument to the Legion Action in Radom is one of the most important places of national memory in the city, commemorating the soldiers of the Polish Legions fighting under the command of Marshal Józef Piłsudski. Its history dates back to the 1920s and is inseparably connected with events that shaped Polish independence.

History of the uprising

The idea of ​​building the monument was born in 1923 , on the occasion of the exhumation of the corpse of Capt. Józef Mariański-a Radomian who died in the Polish-Bolshevik war. Initially, it was planned to set up a monument at the Roman Catholic cemetery, but by the decision of the City Council of 1924 a more symbolic place was chosen - Radom market , which during the partitions was the place of execution of the participants of the January Uprising. The event is an exceptional rank.

Destruction and reconstruction

the monument survived to April 1940 , when it was destroyed by the German occupier . In its place a fire pool was created.

during the " carnival of Solidarity ", November 11, 1981, a patriotic manifestation was held, during which a symbolic mock -up of the monument was erected. The Citizens' Committee for the Rebuilding of the Legionnaire monument was created at that time, but the announcement of martial law a month later interrupted these activities.

It was only in 1998 that the monument was reconstructed in its original location .

appearance and symbolism

The original monument designed the original monument Kazimierz Pietkiewicz , and it was made by the Łopańscy brothers in Warsaw. The inspiration was Legionnaire statuette , sculpted by Włodzimierz Konieczny, which Piłsudski received in 1916.

The sculpture presents the soldier supported in the shooting Szydłowiec sandstone. The whole is complemented by the inscription:
